Advantage Federal Credit Union

Advantage Federal Credit Union (AFCU) is a not-for-profit financial organization, wholly and locally owned and operated by and for its members.

  • As a cooperative financial institution, AFCU members benefit from generous dividends on savings and low rates on loans.

  • Serving its members in the Rochester community since 1931, AFCU now serves 14,000 members and has assets over $85 million.

  • A volunteer board of directors governs Advantage.

  • About one out of every four Americans is a member of a credit union. This number steadily increases and surveys show that people choose credit unions over all other financial institutions for consumer satisfaction!

AFCU Mission

To be every member's first choice for financial services.

Membership in Advantage is available to:

  • Employees, retirees and volunteers of Advantage Select Employer Groups.
  • Individuals who live, work, worship, volunteer, or attend school in the City of Rochester.*
  • Businesses and other legal entities in the City of Rochester.
  • Immediate family members and household members of individuals who are eligible for membership.

    * City membership is open to zip codes 14604 through 14616; 14619 through 14621; 14627; 14649; or 14652.

Advantage is proud to be affiliated with such organizations as the University of Rochester, The Rochester City School District, and Via Health, and now Advantage can provide its products and services to people who previously were not afforded the opportunity to belong to a credit union.

Joining your credit union gives you and your family instant money-saving opportunities.

Pass the word on to your friends and neighbors, so they too can start enjoying the money-saving benefits of membership in Advantage.

You're a Member for Life

When you join Advantage, you become a member for life. A change in employment, retirement, or a move to another location will not affect the status of your credit union membership.

Belonging is Easy

It's as simple as paying a $1 membership fee, and having at least $5 on deposit in a credit union account. To become a member, stop by either one of our branches located at 255 W. Broad St. and 1625 Mt. Hope Ave. Please be prepared to show two forms of identification. One document must be a photo ID such as: New York State Driver's License or non-driver ID, NY State pistol permit or passport. You will receive a membership kit and complete information regarding your account. Membership is subject to eligibility.

Check 21

What is it? Check 21 allows the credit union to electronically capture, transmit, and retrieve check images of all checks deposited at the credit union. This will reduce check fraud, generate faster clearing times, and allow us the ability to retrieve copies of the checks you deposit.

A federal law called "Check Clearing for the 21st Century Act" (Check 21) is designed to increase the efficiency and security of the national check payment system through the use of electronic image technology. This Act went into effect on October 28, 2004. We think it is important for you to know about this process.

One of the biggest impacts of this technology is that checks may clear faster, which means that instead of checks taking 3-4 days to clear - they may clear 1-2 days quicker! Faster clearing of checks is possible because financial institutions can now request payment of a check by sending an electronic image of the check rather than the actual paper check.

When you make a payment by check, it may be handled by several financial institutions before it actually posts to your account. Effective immediately, any financial institution involved in this process may choose to replace your original check with a "substitute check," a copy made from the electronic image of the original check. Check 21 specifies that a "substitute check" will be the legal equivalent of the original check for all purposes, and must be accepted in the same way as the original. You may see a "substitute check" when you view your account information online or request a copy of your original check for proof of payment.

Advantage Locations

Advantage FCU is part of a collaborative network of "shared" CU Service Centers. What this means is that members can do their "banking" at many more locations in the area, and 100's of locations throughout the USA, as part of AFCU's participation as a Shared Service Center. A Shared Service Center is a credit union branch that is equipped to accept transactions from members of other credit unions. For Advantage members, that means members can perform most banking transactions at any of the participating Shared Service Centers.

Click here for a list of the Rochester area CU Service Centers.

Of course, Advantage members can still do their "banking" at any one of our branch locations.
