Advantage Federal Credit Union has recently received calls reporting that people have received text messages or pages on cell phones in a fraudulent attempt to gain personal information in regards to their debit card.
Advantage is confident that no member information has been compromised. Many of those who have called us to report this incident have never been members of the credit union, therefore the data could not have been obtained from any credit union files. This appears to be a scam involving random phone numbers which were somehow obtained by fraudsters.

****UPDATE 9/18/14: THE HOME DEPOT COMPLETES MALWARE ELIMINATION & ENHANCED ENCRYPTION OF PAYMENT DATA IN ALL U.S. STORES. Read More.****
Home Depot reported a data breach in early September. According to their press release, the breach affects customers who used their credit or debit card to pay for in-store purchases at a Home Depot beginning in April 2014. Presently, it does not appear that online purchases were affected.
If you are traveling out of state or country, activity on your cards may be perceived as unusual and therefore, may result in your card being blocked. To avoid any disruption while traveling, please notify our Call Center (585.454.5900, Ext. 5) before traveling out of town.
We suggest you take more than one card, preferably one being a credit card. However, we suggest that you do not carry all your cards in case your wallet gets stolen. If using another financial institution’s card, we suggest you notify them of your travel plans, as well.

UPDATE: In an effort to protect you and the credit union due to the Target data breach between November 27th and December 15th- We have sent replacement Debit/ATM Cards to those who used their debit card in this time frame.
AFCU will be terminating the use of compromised Debit/ATM Cards Friday, January 24th.
If you have already replaced your debit card at one of our branches, please shred the mailed replacement card and use the card you already have.

Advantage offers e-alerts for debit and credit transactions that are sent by either e-mail or text alert. “These alerts occur in real time so that our members are immediately informed of a transaction that they did not authorize” says Jeff Bocach, President and CEO. Bocach also stated “We also instant issue debit cards in all of our branches for new and replacement debit cards so that there literally is no waiting if a member experiences a problem.”
E-alerts for debit, credit, ATM, and other services were initiated by Advantage in reaction to a number of local and national data breaches at merchants in the past, as an effort to keep members as well informed as possible and as close to an actual event as possible. The Target issue prompted Advantage to increase its member awareness about the protections that are available to them.
